SPAN’s Program in Dance prides itself on its accessibility to students who have never danced before. If you’ve ever walked, skipped, jumped, run or fallen, you’ve danced! Several of our dancers who began dancing at SPAN have gone on to professional careers. We teach simple, basic elements, from which the steps are derived and there is no age limit.

Dancing is our first line of social activity. Good dancing is a lifetime investment in fun, poise, confidence, improved personality, and new friends. Beyond these, dancing is a superb physical conditioner – providing fun without working at it. It opens up a wonderful new world of togetherness and a thriving year-round social calendar.
Some classes welcome drop-ins, but others do not. Typically the more formal the setting, the more likely pre-payment will be required. If the type of dance requires mastery of some basic steps before moving into more complex patterns; dropping in will be discouraged. More likely than not, visitors who just want to watch are always welcome.
No you will not need a partner to do Freestyle and Hip Hop but it would be advisable to have a partner for Latin American and Ballroom.
Our program requires that people change partners in our classes and practice sessions.
Learning to dance in a group class absolutely depends on dancing with different partners. Dancing with different partners enables you to lead or follow different kinds of dancers. It teaches men and women to adjust their lead and follow, it high-light ones strengths and weaknesses and it will make you a better dancer faster. If you attend a group class and only dance with one partner, your learning rate will be significantly reduced. If you want to dance with only one partner, you should seriously consider private lessons where the instructor can focus on each individual’s dancing. Dance with as many different partners as possible to enhance your dancing, practice your leading, and get the most from your classes.
At our studio, we want your lessons to be relaxing and fun. There is no enforced dress code of any sort for our students from the ankles up. We do recommend some shoes appropriate for dancing.
Dance costumes including shoes, can be bought at our studio.
